FunkyPilot Academy – Comic Book Fonts and Design

Howdy,

In my last post, you saw some screenshots of our comic book. While the books are nearly complete, we will still make minor changes. More specifically, we are in the process of changing the font in the dialogue.

Did you know most comic book studios have several people working on one comic book? Usually, one artist does the initial black-and-white sketch, the next person does the coloring, and another creates the word balloons and lettering.

Then there is the story writer, scriptwriter, cover artist, and editor.

A much smaller team is behind our comic books, and just about everything from cover to cover is done by one artist, including the word balloons and lettering.

Our artist, Phi, is doing a great job with the art. I asked him to create a cartoony-style comic book that’s not too realistic or serious looking, and that’s exactly what I got!

However, a certain comic book pro told me I should use a different font in the dialogue. The original font is fairly easy to read, but most comic books use “all caps” fonts.

So, we decided to change it to a font more familiar to mainstream comic book readers. I figured, can’t go wrong with whatever Marvel or DC are using, right?

Long story short, the font that you see in some of the screenshots is probably not the font we use in the final product!

To speed up creating our comic books, I am now personally changing the font. Thus, I’m the acting letterer now, and Phi has more time to create the art!

See the font above font and the one below. The one below is the way we go..

If you have any thoughts on the font, let me know by leaving a comment!

Below is another example of the font we decided to use. This panel is from Issue 2, part of the Pilot story.

Sorry to ruin the surprise, but the pig can really talk, and he is one of the main characters in the series! Sherman the Pig is like Brian the Dog in Family Guy (a popular cartoon show, in case you don’t know), except completely different…

I wrote six issues for this series a couple of years ago, and one of my main supporting characters is artificial intelligence (AI), introduced in Issue 3.

I thought it would be a groundbreaking idea, but thanks to Microsoft and ChatGPT, it’s now something everyone is familiar with… I’ll introduce you to our AI in my next post

Best regards,
